We like mess. We like imperfections. We do not like bacteria. Here is the boring science behind why properly made soap works.

Our workshop is a working place, not a hospital. But the chemistry that happens inside is precise. When we mix our family Koroneiki olive oil with sodium hydroxide (lye), a chemical reaction occurs called saponification. During this process, the oils and lye transform into soap and natural glycerin. Once the reaction is complete and the soap is fully cured, no active lye remains in the final bar.

The resulting soap is naturally alkaline, with a pH around 9–10. This environment is unfriendly to many microorganisms and helps the soap effectively lift dirt, oils, and impurities from the skin during washing. Our soaps are cold process soaps. They air cure on racks for 6 to 8 weeks. If a rack gets forgotten in the dark, the soap is probably better for it. During this time, excess water evaporates and the bars become harder, longer lasting, and more stable. A properly cured dry soap bar is naturally less hospitable to microbial growth than wet environments.

Our soaps are tested by certified laboratories and pass required microbiological safety standards before they are stamped with the duck. We are anti-marketing, not anti-science.
