What detergent is

Synthetic surfactants. Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates, Alcohol Ethoxylates, Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate. Petroleum or palm oil derivatives. They clean effectively. They also come with optical brighteners (make fabric appear whiter under UV — they do not clean, they mask), synthetic fragrance (one word that can legally represent hundreds of individual compounds), and anti-redeposition agents.

They work. They leave residue. Most people don't react to the residue. Some do.

What soap flakes are

The result of saponification. Oils reacted with sodium hydroxide. The reaction produces soap molecules and glycerin. We grate our bars. The INCI list has real ingredients with real names you can look up.

The honest comparison

Soap flakes clean comparably to detergent for most household laundry. They perform less well on heavy stains and in hard water without washing soda. They contain no optical brighteners and no petroleum-derived surfactants. Scent depends on the bar they were grated from — our spearmint flakes carry Mentha Spicata oil, a pure essential oil — so the INCI list for the variety you are buying is what answers it.

Neither is wrong. They are different products for different priorities.

Are soap flakes better than detergent?

No — and neither is the question. Better at what, on which fabric, in whose water. Detergent wins on heavy grease and on synthetic workwear with grime in it. Flakes win if what you object to is optical brighteners and petroleum-derived surfactants sitting in your sheets. Anyone answering this in one word is selling you something.
